Low Acidity Coffee
What is low-acid coffee?
Most coffee is naturally acidic (an average cup has a pH value of 5). So when you hear a barista talk about ‘acidity’, they’re usually concerned with flavour – the smoother, softer profile of a low-acid brew, or the bright, fruity flavours of a high-acididity cup. The lower the number, the more acidic it is, and low-acid coffee is closer to 5.5-6; this might seem like a small shift, but that difference is massive for your gut. A brew that might cause acid reflux or indigestion is suddenly smooth, and it’s all determined by three key elements:
- Where it’s grown: Grown high up in the mountains (like a lot of our favourite Ethiopian or Colombian coffee) take longer to mature, meaning they often develop naturally acidic profiles.
- How it’s roasted: The longer and hotter it’s roasted, the more its natural acids break down. That means a rich, dark, or medium-dark roast is naturally much gentler on your stomach.
- How it’s processed: Washed coffees tend to hold onto their crisp acidity, and naturally processed coffee (where they’re left to dry out in the sun while still inside the fruit) leads to a sweeter, heavier cup.

Does low acidity mean less flavour?
It’s a common misconception that low-acid coffee has less flavour, but reducing acidity doesn’t minimise taste: it alters the profile to something rich and comforting. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect:
- Bolder, deeper notes: Depending on the varietal and its origin, you taste rich dark chocolate, toasted nuts, creamy caramel, brown sugar, and sweet, earthy spices in your cup.
- A heavier, velvety body: Low-acid coffee often has a much fuller mouthfeel. It’s thick and creamy on the palate.
- A smoother finish: The best low-acid coffee leaves a lingering sweetness.

Smooth flavour
We’re big fans of the tongue-tingling brightness that lighter roasts bring, but sometimes, you want to trade it in for deep, indulgent flavours like rich milk chocolate.
The velvet-like smoothness of our Passiflora Decaf is a great example.
It’s a syrupy-sweet coffee packed with hazelnut, biscoff and caramelised brown sugar. Or, for something with a caffeine kick, try Los Pijao: a creamy, well-balanced coffee with an indulgent milk chocolate and dates profile.
Gentler cup
When shopping for coffee for sensitive stomachs, you’ll likely come across different low-acid options. That’s because these coffees contain fewer phenolic and chlorogenic acids, which can trigger reflux.
So, if you suffer from a particularly sensitive stomach, be kind to your insides! Choose high-quality specialty BSC coffee that is naturally low in acid.
Easy drinking
The best low-acid coffee is great any time of day. If you like it black, as an espresso, or paired with oat milk for a velvety flat white, our low-acid cups are the best fit for your daily brew.

FAQs
Is coffee acidic?
Chemically speaking, yes. On the pH scale (where 7 is completely neutral), standard coffee usually sits around a 5. Low-acid coffee tends to have a pH range between 5.5 and 6.5.
Is low-acid coffee the same as decaf?
No. Caffeine and acidity are separate things. Decaf is coffee that has had its caffeine removed, and low-acid coffee is full-strength, fully caffeinated coffee that’s naturally low in acid.
Does dark roast coffee have less acidity?
Generally, yes, it does. The longer the bean is roasted for, the more its natural acids break down. Where light roasts hold onto those bright, zesty, acidic notes, medium-dark and dark roasts naturally become richer.
What does low-acidity coffee taste like?
Deep and traditional. You can expect a thick, velvety body with a naturally sweet finish.
