About the producer:
Migoti Coffee originates from the slopes of Migoti Mountain in Burundi's Bujumbura Province. Named after a local indigenous tree, the company established its first coffee washing station here in 2016. Coffee farming in Burundi dates back to the early 1900s under Belgian colonial rule and has since evolved through privatisation and state control, with the sector facing significant challenges, particularly following the 2015 political crisis.
Despite these challenges, Burundi's ideal coffee-growing conditions, elevations of 1500-2000 meters, Arabica Bourbon trees, and abundant rainfall, support a vibrant coffee industry. Arabica coffee now makes up nearly 100% of the country's production. The Bourbon variety, cultivated in this region, is known for its sweetness, bright acidity, and complex flavour profile, consistently receiving high cupping scores.
Migoti Coffee Company plays a vital role in this sector, purchasing coffee cherries directly from local farmers. The washing station, managed by a skilled local team, produced over 300 tons of green coffee between 2017 and 2019. These coffees are recognized among the best specialty coffees from Burundi, highlighting the quality of the region's production.
The station operates with a dedicated team, including ten permanent staff and over 250 temporary workers during the coffee season. The company not only focuses on processing high-quality coffee but also on educating farmers in sustainable practices to significantly increase their coffee yields. This community-centered approach ensures that both the quality of coffee and the livelihoods of the farmers are continuously improving.
