Costa Rican Coffee
What is Costa Rican coffee?
Bright and balanced with a medium to full body, the lively acidity of Costa Rican coffee makes each cup an experience. There are three main profiles of Costa Rican coffees, with each taste determined by region and processing method. When you want juicy, fruit-forward notes, look for naturally processed beans: find out where you sit on a scale of low-ferment naturals to bolder batches that have undergone an almost alcohol-like fermentation.
If you find Costa Rican whole bean coffee that delivers notes of chocolate or nuts, it’s likely a washed coffee – you might even taste stone fruits like peach or apricot. The variety of Costa Rican coffee is all thanks to the conditions in the republic’s eight coffee-growing regions. At high altitude (usually above 1,200 metres), the thinner air and cooler temperatures cause the coffee cherries to grow more slowly. Right now, our Costa Rican coffee for sale include the El Corazon, a variety grown 1500-1700 meters above sea level. If you’d like to taste what we’re talking about, grab a bag at Bold Street Coffee. BSC offers Costa Rican coffee, and other South American coffees as whole beans or ground for espresso, moka pot, AeroPress, V60, Chemex or French press. Your brew, your way.

What do we love about Costa Rican coffee?
Costa Rican coffee farmers don’t settle for anything less than exceptional.
Even the country’s official canephora rules are framed around protecting the prestige of Costa Rican coffee through controlled growing areas. All Costa Rican coffee must be 100% high-quality Arabica. Everyone likes coffees with character, but we also want them to be dependably delightful to drink, every time.
The quality-first thinking of the region’s producers means that Costa Rican whole bean coffee can be comforting with gentle acidity and softer fruit notes. Or, it can bring a more dessert-like feel with extra sweetness and a rounder feel. Classic or expressive? It varies massively, and we love how distinctive Costa Rican coffees can feel from one producer to the next. This origin is actually known for producer-led processing, which tells you something about where the coffee is from.
The rise of micro-mills in Costa Rica means many growers can now process smaller volumes with far more control, compared to sending all their cherries to larger shared mills. The flavours of Costa Rica coffee for sale today preserve individual farm and lot identity. When you’re sampling BSC’s El Corazon coffee, you’re tasting the influence of a specific environment.
El Corazon
Our current Costa rica coffee hail from La Piedra de Rivas at 1,500 to 1,700 metres above sea level.
Produced by John Alvarado and Katthya Fonseca at the Corazón de Jesús micro mill in Brunca, Costa Rica, El Corozon is a fruit-forward filter coffee with notes of papaya, melon and coconut.
Each tropical, expressive cup is the result of ‘Natural Reposado’, where the cherries are rested in shaded tanks before being dried slowly on raised beds. Roasted for filter, you’ll enjoy an intense fruity profile with a creamy, coconut finish.

Costa Rican Coffee FAQs
What does Costa Rican coffee taste like?
You can expect bright acidity with citrusy flavours. The specific taste of Costa Rican coffee varies from producer to producer and region to region, so you might find notes of chocolate, stone fruit, citrus, berry or something more tropical.
Is Costa Rican coffee acidic?
Usually, yes, but the term doesn’t refer to harshness or sourness. Acidic means vibrant – it’s what’s described as ‘bright’ or ‘tangy’, a sensation that’s often felt at the back and sides of the tongue.
High-grown coffee isn’t aggressively sharp, but balanced by the sweetness and clarity of the processing methods.
Why do some beans taste like chocolate while others taste like tropical fruit?
Coffee flavour is built in layers, the biggest factors being variety, growing conditions, processing, and roast.
Cup quality changes with genetics and environment, so a coffee tastes more chocolatey when its natural sweetness is pushed towards cocoa, caramel, nuts or roastier flavours.
Likewise, a more tropical, fruit-forward bean is the result of high-altitude stress and (in the case of many Costa Rican coffees) experimental processing.
