Chocolatey Coffee

What is chocolatey coffee?

Indulge in the cocoa-like flavour profiles of BSC’s chocolatey coffees. These rich, rounded brews have subtle hints of brownie, roasted nuts, caramel, and soft dried fruit, a result of the coffee’s terroir (the natural environment where it’s grown; soil, climate, topography).

Plants grown across Central and South America at low altitudes, in countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala, naturally develop sweet, creamy milk chocolate notes with lower acidity. But it’s how you brew it that makes the difference: a well-developed espresso roast can build body and caramelisation, so for coffee with chocolate notes, we recommend brewing methods like Espresso, Cafetière, and Moka Pot.

Or you can let BSC’s skilled baristas do it for you. Find the most chocolatey coffee near you: we have locations in Liverpool, Manchester, and Glossop. If you’re dropping by our original home on Bold Street for a flat white (or grabbing a bag of our BSC House Espresso to brew at home), we’re always on hand to help you dial in comforting cocoa notes.

Why do people love chocolatey coffee?

Did you know that chocolatey coffee contains 800 chemical compounds, some of which it shares with actual chocolate? You’re not imagining the subtle aroma: it’s real, and a massive reason for its widespread popularity.

Comfortingly familiar

Fall for the depth of specialty coffee with chocolate notes: there’s a nostalgia associated with its deep flavour profile. It has a nuanced complexity that still feels comfortingly familiar.

We love the bright, high-acidity fruit notes of ferment-led flavours, but chocolatey coffees are reassuringly drinkable.

A match made for milk

Do you love flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos? Even the most chocolatey coffee works well with milk. A well-developed espresso roast can bring structure to syrupy depth, but the cocoa notes have enough structural integrity to cut through milk.

Brewing

If you like experimenting with brewing, chocolatey coffee works well with different equipment. Bring out intensity with espresso, or create a sweet, concentrated cup with an AeroPress. Your coffee, your way.

Rich mouthfeel/low acidity

When roasted right, the best chocolatey coffee rounds off the bright, sharp acidity often found in lighter roasts. In its place, you get a heavy, syrupy mouthfeel that coats the palate.

FAQs

Do you add actual chocolate to the coffee?

No. When we describe a coffee as chocolatey, we’re talking about its natural tasting notes. The flavour comes from the bean's genetics, the soil it was grown in, and the caramelisation of natural sugars that occur during roasting.

Which coffee origins produce the most chocolatey coffee?

You can find the best chocolatey coffee in regions like Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala and other South and Central American countries.

What roast level is best for chocolate notes?

For specialty coffee, a medium-to-medium-dark roast is the sweet spot for chocolate notes.

What is the best way to brew a chocolate-forward coffee?

It depends on your preference: these coffees excel as espresso, but if you’re brewing filter coffee at home, a French press or a Moka pot will work just as well.

What is the best way to brew high-altitude coffee?

We recommend manual filter methods like a V60, Chemex, or Aeropress

As high-altitude beans are so dense, they require water that’s just off the boil (around 94°C–96°C) to properly extract those sweet, delicate floral and fruity notes.
