Single Origin Coffee

What is single-origin coffee?

Single-origin coffee is coffee sourced from a single location. Depending on the roaster, that ‘origin’ might refer to a specific farm, producer, co-operative, region or country, but the core idea remains the same: the coffee is selected to express a sense of place. When you drink single-origin coffee, you’re experiencing terroir, the combination of environmental factors that influence how coffee develops and tastes.

Altitude, soil composition, climate, rainfall and shade all contribute to shaping the final cup profile. Because the coffee is not blended, you get a clearer, more transparent expression of origin. If you enjoy moving between profiles, for example a nut-led, chocolatey coffee from Brazil one week, and something brighter and more fruit-forward from Ethiopia the next, Bold Street Coffee’s flavour-led, origin-first approach is designed for that kind of exploration.

What is the difference between blends and single-origin coffee?

Single-origin coffee comes from a defined, traceable source such as a farm, producer or region.

A blend combines coffees from multiple origins to create a balanced and consistent flavour profile. Both serve a purpose, the difference comes down to what you want from your cup.

In practice, this usually means:

Single-origin coffee highlights the unique characteristics of one place, often with more distinct and expressive flavour notes such as florals, citrus, stone fruit, nuts or chocolate.

Blends are typically built for balance and consistency. As coffee is an agricultural product, flavour can shift between harvests. Blending allows roasters to adjust components and maintain a stable profile throughout the year.

Neither is inherently better, it’s about preference and context.

Single Origin Coffee FAQs

Is single origin always better?

Single-origin coffee isn’t necessarily better, it’s simply different.

Quality is determined by sourcing, processing, roasting and brewing. What single-origin offers is clarity and a more direct expression of origin.

Is single-origin good for espresso?

Absolutely. Single-origin coffee can work exceptionally well for espresso.

Depending on the profile, it may present more acidity or brightness than a traditional blend, so dialling in becomes more important, but it can produce highly expressive and complex shots.

Are single-origin coffees seasonal?

Yes. Coffee is a seasonal agricultural product, with harvest cycles varying across producing countries.

This means single-origin offerings naturally rotate throughout the year, keeping menus fresh and reflective of current harvests.

Whole bean or ground?

If possible, choose whole coffee and grind just before brewing to preserve aromatics and freshness.

If convenience is key, pre-ground coffee is still a good option, just ensure the grind size matches your brew method.

How should I store coffee?

Store your coffee in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from light and heat.

Avoid the fridge or freezer, as moisture and temperature fluctuations can degrade flavour and aromatics.
