Arabica Coffee

What is Arabica Coffee?

If you want a refined flavour profile, sourcing high-quality lots is essential, and Arabica is the world’s most loved coffee species. Grown at high altitudes in tropical climates across the globe, these plants mature slowly on mountain slopes. It’s this slow growth in cooler mountain air that gives the coffee cherries more time to develop complex natural sugars.

Bold Street Coffee has been an institution of the Liverpool hospitality scene since 2010 because we do things properly, including sourcing arabica coffee from local coffee producers and family-run farms.

Arabica vs Robusta: What’s the difference?

Robusta is cultivated at lower altitudes, meaning it produces a larger yield and boasts nearly double the caffeine content of Arabica coffee. With these coffees, you enjoy a heavy, syrupy body, low acidity, and earthy tasting notes that produce a thick crema.

Arabica coffee is associated with more sweetness and softer acidity. The slow maturation process yields a dense bean with nearly twice the concentration of natural sugars (and roughly 60% more lipids) as Robusta.

But the best arabica coffee can be found right here at Bold Street Coffee.

FAQs

Is Arabica coffee good for espresso and filter?

Arabica coffee’s high concentration of lipids means it works well across all brewing methods.

The fruit, floral, and crisp acidic notes of a lighter roast shine best through filter brewing (like a V60 or batch brew). For espresso, a carefully developed medium roast will yield a beautifully balanced shot.

What’s the best way to brew Arabica coffee at home?

It depends on what you want to bring out of the cup. If you’ve picked up a bright, fruity single-origin Arabica, brewing it through a paper filter (using a V60, Chemex, or AeroPress) is fantastic for clarity.

When you want a heavier-bodied cup with chocolate or caramel notes, dialling it in on a home espresso machine or a stovetop Moka pot will yield a denser extraction.

Does Arabica coffee have less caffeine?

Yes, it does. On average, Arabica beans contain roughly half the caffeine of Robusta beans (around 1.5% for Arabica, compared to Robusta's 2.7%).
